THE SEA

For ten days she has been meaning to go to the beach. And the beach is only a hundred metres away.

Each morning she wakes, Salma thinks this is another day I did not go to the beach.

Dissatisfaction clings to her throughout the day. The house does not look right, the colour of the mountain is duller than it has been in the past. All her things appear frayed and worn and she moves with the sense that she has taken a tumble in life.

Ten days.

Then eleven.

Then she loses count and thinks it has been a month.

The sea is so close and it has begun to appear in my dreams.

Finally she goes, irritable, what exactly is the fuss?

She sees the sea that is the ocean that is the endlessness of the sky above. She sees the world here and it operates at a different pace.

At first she berates herself for leaving it so long.

Then she thinks relax, you are here now.

Finally she is at peace and she feels the sea has carved out a space in her insides and that she can breathe and be alive.

Then it is time to turn and to promise herself that she will not leave it so long until next time.
